Paul Rudd in a Room (Dancing).

Published on March 1, 2012 by in Random

Sometimes when you’re playing with new technology, great things happen.

Other times, you end up with this: Paul Rudd in a Room (Dancing).  (Do yourself a favor and open that link in Chrome… every other browser sort of hates it).

Go ahead, take a look at the source code.  The walls, ceiling, floor, dancers… everything is just a plain old DIV, positioned with CSS3 3d transforms and moved about with a little JavaScript.  Nice, eh?

Who says awesome has to be useful?

TheUltimatums.com Preview

Published on February 15, 2012 by in Projects

First, some background info – The Ultimatums are a band from the Fairmont, WV area.  They are awesome live, and if you get a chance to see them I recommend you do.  These guys are extremely talented and it’s incredibly refreshing for an area band to play something besides country and Creed covers.

I’ve seen these guys only twice over the last few years, yet each time I was impressed enough to give them a website.  The last version, while functional, was not my best work. Read more…

Dis town – is comin’ like a ghost town…

Published on February 14, 2012 by in Projects

I wonder how many of the people I know will get that reference…

Anyway, it’s been too long since I’ve updated this, so here goes:

The game has pretty much been abandoned (obviously).  It was a fun way to get into Actionscript, but unfortunately it could not hold my attention.  Very little does actually.  Regardless, it is playable and can be found here: http://blog.thatjoshguy.com/game/

One of the reasons I haven’t updated in so long was a lack of personal projects.  I’ve been doing some pretty cool stuff at work, but nothing that really applies to anything I’d like to blog about.  I have, however, just completed a website for a friend’s band that I will be sharing as soon as it launches.  I’m very excited about it as I got to try some pretty neat tricks, and the layout is quite different than anything I’ve done in the past.  In the next week or so I’ll write a post on all of the visual coolness, as well as the back-end invisible stuff that is actually just as cool.

until then…

Hiatus: OVER

Published on April 26, 2011 by in Projects

Took a few days off from the game to make sure I don’t’ get bored with it (I have a tendency to do that), but I did get some updates done recently and just now got it uploaded at the usual place.

Wanted to shout a huge THANK YOU to Michael Gum who has provided me with the two tracks used so far in the game.  They are awesome, hopefully he’ll do one or two more for me :)

Anyway, the update includes Turrets which will fire at the player at a given interval.  Having projectiles flying around whilst trying to avoid the Green Meanies is an exciting element, and definitely can add to the difficulty.

I also extended the animation system a bit so that I can have multiple death animations depending on what kills the player.  This can be seen by stepping off a bridge, or (my favorite) stepping on a landmine.

Ads in games

Published on April 18, 2011 by in Random

I’m just curious… What are everyone’s thoughts on advertising in flash games? If it’s unobtrusive (i.e. skip-able and/or doesn’t interrupt game play), does it ruin the game experience? Is it expected at this point?

I’d like to attempt to monetize my future flash game(s), but I personally have always hated ad placement in flash games… Thoughts?
